Easy call? West Virginia defender flagged for obvious targeting hit vs. Kansas State

Targeting is a topic that has become particularly frustrating in the world of college football. Many calls come layered in subjectivity and inconsistent criteria throughout.
That, however, was not the case in Saturday’s game between West Virginia and Kansas State. In fact, this might be the easiest targeting call for officials to get right all season.
On the play, a West Virginia defender came barreling in on the KSU quarterback. As the QB got rid of the ball, the defender took an extra step and launched.
Without even an attempt to use his arms, the defender launched his helmet into the helmet of the QB. Needless to say, this is exactly the type of hit the call should be designed to eliminate.
