On Tuesday night news came out that Michigan men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard was getting a new 5-year deal that included a significant pay bump.

On Wednesday, more details were made available about Howard’s deal. The former Michigan star will reportedly receive a total base compensation of $3.25 million for this season, with escalators each year after. That is an increase over the $2.2 million he was set to earn under his previous deal from May 2019, according to The Detroit News. The total value of the contract will be roughly $17 million before bonuses.

The new contract makes Howard one of the highest-paid men’s basketball coaches in the nation.

The USA Today’s coaches’ salaries database lists four Big Ten coaches among the top 25 in the nation last season: Michigan State’s Tom Izzo ($3.984 million, No. 7), Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg ($3.9 million, No. 10), Illinois’ Brad Underwood ($3.8 million, No. 12) and Indiana’s Archie Miller ($3.3 million, No. 21).

Under his previous deal, Howard’s contract topped out at $2.5 million which he would have earned during the 2023-24 season — the 5th year of his initial deal.

Howard is now in his 3rd year at Michigan, boasting a 44-18 record. In each of his seasons at the helm of the Michigan bench, the Wolverines have been ranked in the top 5 in the nation. Last season the Wolverines won the B1G regular-season title and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
