Michigan State releases contract details for Mel Tucker’s 10-year extension

Michigan State backed up the Brinks truck to keep Mel Tucker in town.
The Spartan head coach officially agreed to a 10-year contract extension on Wednesday night. The deal is worth $95 million over its lifetime.
According to a release from MSU, he’ll get $5.9 million a year as a base salary with $3.2 million in supplemental compensation for media and personal appearances, plus a $400,000 contingent annual bonus. The deal expires Jan. 15, 2032. It is non-performance related and, according to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, fully guaranteed.
Tucker enters some rarefied air as well.

“The decision to extend Mel Tucker’s contract is not based on one year of results, but rather it’s an investment in a promising future for Spartan football,” said MSU AD Alan Haller in a release. “Since his hire in February 2020, the program has experienced high levels of success in 3 key areas: student-athlete development—on and off the field—recruiting momentum, and donor and alumni base engagement and support. Mel has brought an energy to this program which has benefited not only our athletic department but also the university and the surrounding community.”
Tucker and the No. 12 Spartans (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) return to action on Saturday when they host Penn State at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
