Penn State already lost defensive coordinator Brent Pry to Virginia Tech and there was a chance that Anthony Poindexter was the next one out the door. It doesn’t sound like that will be the case any longer, though.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported on Wednesday that he exchanged text messages with Poindexter, Penn State’s co-defensive coordinator. Though he was a candidate for the vacancy at Virginia, he plans to stay put for the time being.

“Timing is everything for both sides,” Poindexter texted Rittenberg. “There will be a day, but I’m going to stay at Penn State.”

Poindexter was highly-regarded as a candidate for the job at Virginia. He was a former All-American defensive back for the Cavaliers in the 1990s. He was also on staff from 2003-13, serving in various roles.

Since leaving Charlottesville, Poindexter has had stops at UConn (2014-16), Purdue (2017-20) and now Penn State.

Virginia is looking to fill the void at head coach left by the sudden news from Bronco Mendenhall that he is stepping away. He will coach the Cavaliers in their Fenway Bowl game against SMU.
