Search for Oregon’s next head coach takes a strange turn

The Oregon search for its next head coach hasn’t lasted long, but it took a strange turn on Friday

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chip Towers, Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning is expected to be named the new Ducks head coach on Monday.

However, multiple reports from several different outlets surfaced shortly after saying that the Ducks have not made any coaching hire and the report that Lanning was hired is “inaccurate.” Those reports come from Matt Prehm (247Sports), James Crepea (The Oregonian), and John Talty (AL.com).

And then ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Lanning’s impending hire by Oregon would “be news to Lanning’s camp, too.”

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, one of the most plugged-in national reporters in all of college football, then reported the same: that Lanning has not been hired by the Ducks.

Lanning started at Georgia as the outside linebackers coach in 2018. He has served as the team’s defensive coordinator since 2019.

Oregon is looking to replace Mario Cristobal, who left earlier this week to become the next head coach at Miami. The Ducks have already been linked to several names, including BYU coach Kalani Sitake—who received a contract extension Friday—as well as former UO coach and current UCLA coach Chip Kelly.

So… maybe keep an eye on Lanning?
