That didn’t take long.

Just a few days after Ohio State decided to part ways with linebackers coach Al Washington, the former Buckeye assistant has landed a new job. The new gig will actually include Washington making a return trip to Columbus.

Washington has landed a new job with Notre Dame, joining Marcus Freeman’s staff in South Bend. Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reported the news on Sunday. Per the report, Washington will be the defensive run game coordinator and defensive line coach for the Fighting Irish.

Washington was not retained by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day following the 2021 season. The Buckeyes made major changes to the defensive staff following a less-than-impressive year on that side of the ball.

After a one-year stop at Michigan in 2018, Washington teamed up with Day at Ohio State, where he spent three seasons. Washington and Freeman were on the same Cincinnati staff in 2017.

The move to Notre Dame means Washington will make a return to Ohio Stadium in 2022. The Fighting Irish open the 2022 season on the road against the Buckeyes on Saturday, Sept. 3.
