Rutgers LB enters NCAA transfer portal after 3 seasons with Scarlet Knights

A Rutgers linebacker will look at playing college football elsewhere after 3 seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

Chris Conti shared Thursday that he has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Entering the portal does not bind a player to actually transfer, players can withdraw and rejoin the team. Conti sharing the announcement himself and thanking Rutgers, though, suggests he plans to leave the program.

A Wyckoff, New Jersey native and DePaul Catholic product, Conti joined the program in 2019. Over 3 seasons, he played in 12 games, recording 5 tackles. Conti will be considered a redshirt sophomore in 2022 as Rutgers applied his COVID-19 blanket waiver for the 2020 season. Conti was Academic All-Big Ten for the 2020 and ’21 seasons.

2021 (Sophomore): Played in three games on special teams … named to the Academic All-Big Ten list (12/14) for the second time … saw action at Penn State (11/20), at Indiana (11/13) and versus Delaware (9/18).

2020 (Sophomore): Played in five games … named to the Academic All-Big Ten list (12/10) … totaled three tackles … added two stops on kickoff coverage in the win at Purdue (11/28) … made a tackle on kickoff coverage versus Michigan (11/21).

2019 (Freshman): Appeared in four games … recorded two tackles on kickoff coverage in the win over Liberty (10/26) … made collegiate debut on special teams against Maryland (10/5).

Prior to Rutgers: Played for head coach John McKenna at DePaul Catholic … guided the Spartans to a 7-5 record as a senior … posted 111 tackles, including 86 solo stops … added an interception, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery … advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 Playoffs … Second Team All-Non-Public selection on defense … rated No. 23 prospect in New Jersey by Rivals and 43rd by 247Sports … as a junior, posted 56 total tackles and two sacks … helped team win the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 title in 2017.
