Michigan State is dealing with alarmingly low numbers along the offensive line this spring, but position coach Chris Kapilovic is offering a long-term perspective.

“Half of my brain feels sorry for these guys … But the other side of me is I can’t waste this opportunity,” he told reporters. “And if I just baby them and we accept mediocrity, then that’s what we’re going to get. so we can’t do that.”

Kapilovic added that he doesn’t care if there are 5 or 7 players out there, the Spartans still have to get better every day.

The breakdown of the lineup is Spencer Brown and Nick Samac as the veterans of group, while Kevin Wigenton and Brandon Baldwin are getting good reps, and Dallas Fincher is playing both center and guard. Geno VanDeMark looked good, but is currently out.

Kapilovic added that being shorthanded up front is quite the change from last year, as young guys are taking their lumps and some are playing multiple positions but he thinks there will be a benefit in the long run.

“The positive to it is there are young guys getting more reps than they ever would have normally,” Kapilovic said.
