Adam Schefter has publicly apologized for his widely criticized tweet breaking the news of Dwayne Haskins’ passing Saturday.
Schefter broke the news of Haskins’ death Saturday morning on Twitter. In a since-deleted tweet, Schefter included mentions of Haskins’ on-field struggles in the NFL. He was criticized by fans, teammates and fellow media members.
Schefter updated his tweet, removing the mentions of professional struggles with a focus on being a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.
Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before becoming Washington’s first-round pick and playing in Pittsburgh, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedric Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3.

“First I wanted to address the death of Dwayne Haskins and the tweet that I posted this weekend,” the ESPN reporter said. “It was insensitive. It was a mistake. And I can assure you it was not my intention. I wish that I could have that tweet back.”
Schefter continued.
“The focus should’ve been on Dwayne,” he said. “Who he was as a person, a husband, a friend and so much more. I want to apologize to Dwayne’s family, his friends, players in the National Football League and offer my condolences to everybody close to Dwayne.”
