The deadline to enter the NCAA transfer portal and maintain immediate eligibility status for the 2022 college football season has come and gone. Student-athletes needed to submit their request to their school by May 1 in order to make the portal deadline.
Now that the window has closed, we have a better idea of the number of student-athletes that have entered the NCAA transfer portal over the past 9 months. It’s a pretty high mark, too.
Back on Feb. 1, I wrote that we were on pace for 2,000 scholarship CFB players and 3,000 total players entering the portal in a 12-month period.
Post-deadline update: 1,991 scholarship players and 2,883 total have entered in the past 9 months.

According to Max Olson of The Athletic, a total of 1,991 scholarship student-athletes have entered the transfer portal. Overall, 2,883 players (including non-scholarship athletes) are in the database.
The NCAA has implemented a one-time transfer rule which allows student-athletes to maintain immediate eligibility at their next destination. They must submit their request before the deadline, though, or will have to receive a waiver from the NCAA.
Even some of the top college football players from last season have, at one point, entered the portal. Former Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams, ex-Texas’ QB Casey Thompson and Pitt wide receiver and Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison are just some of the names to explore other opportunities.
Now that spring football has concluded, coaches across college football will embark on the recruiting trail and dive into the transfer portal.
