Though the deadline for immediate eligibility has passed, players are still allowed to enter the transfer portal at any time under the current system. On Friday, Illinois has seen a member of the 2021 recruiting class hit the portal.
The player is DJ Johnson, a 3-star prospect out of Georgia. He appeared in 8 games as a true freshman and recorded 4 tackles for Bret Bielema’s Illini.

As always, Johnson could elect to withdraw from the portal and return to Champaign, or he could leave Illinois via transfer. Since the May 1 deadline has passed, Johnson would need to file an appeal for immediate eligibility if he does transfer and wants to play during the 2022 season.
Illinois is looking to improve after going 5-7 during Bielema’s first year with the program.
