A versatile veteran contributor that has been in the transfer portal recently revealed his decision on the NBA Draft.

Matthew Mayer, a 4-year player and national championship winner at Baylor, revealed Saturday evening that he is withdrawing from the 2022 NBA Draft. As for where he will play next season, Mayer remains undecided.

“I’ve decided that I’m coming back to college but don’t know where,” Mayer told Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com.

Illinois was previously one of the schools to inquire about Mayer via the transfer portal. Texas Tech, North Carolina, USC, Memphis, Alabama and Arkansas were among the others.

Mayher brings a versatile skill set at 6-foot-9 with over 126 games played in his college career. He averaged 9.8 points, 5 rebounds, an assist and 1.2 steals during the 2021-22 season and is a career 35% shooter from 3-point range.

It will be interesting to see if Illinois continues to pursue Mayer as a transfer target moving forward. The Illini have already added big man Dain Dainja as a transfer from Baylor and small forward Terrence Shannon out of Texas Tech, along with signing a quartet of 4-star prospects via the 2022 recruiting class.
