College football fans don’t wait have too long to witness one of the premier matchups of the 2022 season. On Saturday, Sept. 3, Notre Dame and Ohio State will go head-to-head in Columbus in a game that will undoubtedly have College Football Playoff ramifications.
The matchup between the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes would get plenty of attention, regardless of the time of year it was being played. Making it a Week 1 contest, though, has everyone circling that Sept. 3 date.
Speaking on 97.1 The Fan’s Morning Juice on Wednesday, Ryan Day talked about that colossal Week 1 showdown between premier programs.
“It’s one of those things where, I’ve mentioned this before, at Ohio State we have to win every game. You can’t all the sudden put so much into one and then lay an egg the next week,” Day said. “But that being said, we’re talking about a top 10 matchup, night game at home, going to be an unbelievable atmosphere. Lot of emotion. And so, we are, we’re going to be all over this. We typically do that for our first few opponents anyways.
“So it’s a very good team. Great program. Very good coaching staff. Big challenge and we’re going to work all summer to make sure we’re prepared to play our best football in that game. We get a head start on that.”
Despite their proximity and national status, Ohio State and Notre Dame have played just 6 times with the Buckeyes owning a 4-2 series lead. The last meeting was a Buckeyes win in the Fiesta Bowl in 2016.
Both Ohio State and Notre Dame finished 11-2 in 2021, missing the College Football Playoff.
