Iowa’s wide receiver room has taken a big hit. Veteran receiver and return man Charlies Jones has decided to explore his options outside of Iowa City ahead of the 2022 season.

Matt Zenitz of On3 is reporting that Jones has decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. He was named the B1G Return Specialist of the Year for the Hawkeyes following the 2021 season, racking up 635 kickoff return yards and scoring a touchdown. Jones was also responsible for 285 yards on punt returns.

As a receiver during the 2021 campaign, Jones hauled in 21 receptions for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was a key piece to Iowa’s 10-4 season, which resulted in a B1G West title and championship game appearance.

Jones was also named a first-team All-B1G player as a return man.

Jones has spent the past two seasons with the Hawkeyes. He’s totaled 924 kickoff return yards and 508 yards on punt returns. He did not register any receptions during the 2020 season.

Prior to joining the Hawkeyes in 2019, Jones spent two years at Buffalo. In 2018, he had 18 catches for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns. As a return man, Jones had 289 yards on kickoffs.

Jones will have one season of eligibility to use at his next destination.
