Maryland is living to see another day at the NCAA Tournament after a dramatic back-and-forth win over UConn.
In Sunday’s game, the Terps had staked themselves to a 4-0 lead early and led right out of the gate. A 2-run home run by Troy Schreffler gave Maryland the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, and a solo home run by Nick Lorusso made it 4-0 in the 5th inning.
UConn would eventually break through with 4 runs against Maryland’s bullpen in the 6th inning and 2 more runs in the 8th inning after Maryland had retaken the lead. Terrapin relievers Nigel Belgrave, Will Glock and Sean Heine were each tagged for 2 earned runs.
Fortunately, Ryan Ramsey and Andrew Johnson were able to steady the ship late while combining for 3.1 innings of shutout ball. That set the table for a dramatic walk-off.
Maryland was able to load the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning with Lorusso stepping to the plate. He delivered with a game-winning hit off the wall in right field, setting up a winner-take-all showdown vs. UConn Monday night at 7 pm ET.
