JJ McCarthy discusses offseason rehab, being ‘loyal’ to Michigan entering sophomore season

J.J. McCarthy is gearing up for his second season at Michigan after playing part-time as a freshman in 2021. After battling a shoulder injury this offseason, he’s hoping to be healthy while battling Cade McNamara for the starting role this fall.

Over the weekend, McCarthy was a part of the “Wolverine Weekend” at the Grand Traverse Resort. During the event, McCarthy sat down with Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit to discuss his offseason.

Asked about the status of his shoulder, McCarty said he’s just a few weeks away from being full health and doing everything he needs to on the field.

“It’s a matter of a couple of weeks now that I’ll be back to 100 percent,” McCarthy said. “…It’s doing great. It’s getting better every single day.”

Galli also asked McCarthy about his decision to stay with the Wolverines despite not starting in 2021. A former 5-star prospect, McCarthy showcased his ceiling multiple times as a freshman.

He explained that he’s interested in the process of getting better while also citing his loyalty to Michigan.

“It’s the journey,” McCarthy explained. “I’ve just fallen in love with the process…I’m loyal to the University of Michigan.

“I’m not just going to get up and leave if things don’t go my way.”
