Gary Williams discusses his reaction to B1G expansion, predicts what next wave of realignment could look like

Gary Williams departed the Maryland men’s basketball sidelines after the 2010-2011 season having led the Terrapins to 461 wins and the program’s first, and so far only, national championship in 2002.
The Hall of Fame coach hasn’t strayed far from the game, though, and he had his own take on the expansion of the Big Ten during a recent appearance on the Vinnie and Haynie show on Baltimore sports station 105.7 The Fan.
And while he mentioned his surprise, like most people, at UCLA and USC’s decision to join the B1G, he didn’t feel that the latest wave of conference realignment was over.
“The Southeastern Conference isn’t just going to sit there and allow the Big Ten to just go away from them and just get so much better. So they’re going to go after people,” Williams said, according to 247Sports.com. “I think…you can blame the administrators or whatever, but you have to look out for yourself (because) it’s the big boy world.”
And there’s more to come, Williams predicted.
“I don’t think the Big 10 is done,” he said. “I think there’s going to be more schools coming in.”
In the case of the SEC, they reportedly are not looking to expand past 16 teams at this time. Still, a potentially changing landscape could put things into flux quickly.
We’ll see if Williams’ prediction comes true.
