Tom Allen discusses Indiana QB Donaven McCulley’s decision to switch to wide receiver

Indiana’s Donaven McCulley was a highly-regarded quarterback prospect coming out of high school, rated as the No. 2 player in the Hoosier State and the No. 25 signal-caller in the class of 2021 by 247Sports. And the Indianapolis product rather unsurprisingly opted to remain in-state and play collegiately in Bloomington.
McCulley ended up seeing the field right away: he played in 7 games (starting 4) in 2021, completing 35 of his 82 passes for 475 yards and 2 touchdowns while throwing 2 interceptions. But with the QB position battle down to Jack Tuttle and Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak, the likelihood of seeing substantial playing time in 2022 was slim.
As a result, the sophomore reportedly made the switch to wide receiver, a decision ultimately confirmed to Bloomington Herald-Times and IndyStar Hoosiers beat writer Dustin Dopirak by coach Tom Allen:
Allen told IndyStar the decision to move was actually McCulley’s idea. The 6-5, 210-pounder has had an interest in the position for years, Allen said, and believed it would be his quickest path to playing time this season with there being extensive competition at quarterback…
Allen said he was thrilled with the move, as McCulley’s length, athleticism and skill set gives him the opportunity to make an immediate impact.
With fall practice just a few weeks away, we’ll see if McCulley’s decision to line up as a wideout ends up paying off.
