Former Michigan assistant and current Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain announced a medical scare on Monday that will prevent him from making an appearance at the MAC’s media day.
McElwain took to Twitter to reveal that he had suffered a seizure on Sunday. However, after further testing, he is “doing fine”, but he will remain in the hospital for further evaluation. Taking his place at Thursday’s MAC Media Day is defensive coordinator Robb Akey.
McElwain spent over 25 years as an assistant at various stops before his first head-coaching role with Colorado State. He ultimately was hired at Florida in Dec. 2014 to replace Will Muschamp, but was fired 7 games into the 2017 season.
After a year at Michigan as wide receivers coach under Jim Harbaugh, McElwain was named head coach of the Chippewas ahead of the 2019 season. In 3 seasons, he is 20-13 (15-7 MAC) with 2 MAC West Division titles and a 1-1 bowl record.
On Sunday I had a seizure. I’m doing fine and all the tests have come back good. The doctors have asked that I stay in the hospital for a few days, so I won’t be at MAC Media Day. I know Coach Akey, Lew and Jamezz will do a great job. I can’t wait to get camp started.
