Lockwood initially committed to Ohio State and in his announcement, he acknowledged flipping away from Ohio State as a recruit. Lockwood issued a statement on his commitment:
“First of all, I’m grateful for Ohio State, the coaching staff, and the Buckeye players and fans. I have a lot of respect for the program and the team. I’ve been all in with Buckeye Nation, so this decision and announcement is hard for me,” Lockwood said. “I’m flipping my commitment to the University of Alabama. I look forward to what the future brings and how I can develop as a player and person under Coach Saban and Coach Cox. Roll Tide!”
He committed to Ohio State in August 2021 and made his official visit to Columbus in June. After being committed for nearly 1 year, he decided to withdraw his commitment and join Alabama. Lockwood was ranked as the 2nd overall recruit in Tennessee and the 9th-ranked tight end in the country in 2023.
