Purdue is a little less than a month away from opening its 2022 football schedule. And it will face a B1G opponent right from the jump on Sept. 1, hosting Penn State in West Lafayette on FOX during a game that has been declared a blackout.
Can the Boilermakers improve on a 9-4 record in 2021, a season that saw them finish 6-3 in the B1G while claiming a pair of wins over Top 5 opponents (at No. 2 Iowa last Oct. 16 and at home against No. 3 Michigan State 3 weeks later) and a Music City Bowl versus Tennessee? Jeff Brohm’s team, who took part in their first preseason practice on Tuesday, was picked by the media to finish 4th in the West Division after ending the 2021 campaign in that spot.
“I thought we looked pretty slow overall and lacked some finish. Now, sometimes that happens day one without pads, but we’ve got to make sure now we’re pushing ourselves to play harder, to play faster and to finish,” Brohm told reporters on Tuesday, according to Rivals.com.
One player that Brohm had an eye on was Charlie Jones, a transfer from Iowa. Jones enters as a talented return man that will add another dimension to the Boilermakers’ special teams unit.
“We’re going to use him a lot of different ways on the outside, on the inside, return kicks,” he said. “He’s got good receiving skills, he can run good routes, understands football. He definitely will be a big factor for us.”
