Tom Allen updates timeline for determining QB battle at Indiana

Tom Allen updated the timeline for when Indiana’s starting quarterback will be announced.
Indiana will wait to announce the starting quarterback until kickoff for the first game of the season against Illinois on Sept. 2. The starting quarterback will be a mystery until the offense takes the field for the opening possession against Illinois and it seems like Allen is happy to keep it that way.
Allen said he's not going to announce the quarterback until kickoff, but says he wants to know internally in the days after the second scrimmage. "I will know. The team will know, and he will know." (So that should be fun.)

“I will know. The team will know, and he will know,” Allen said.
The quarterback competition was initially expected to be just a two-man race. As fall camp has continued on, the quarterback competition opened up to a three-man battle for the starting job. Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and Jack Tuttle were expected to battle for the starting position.
Allen on quarterbacks: "I wanted to get the ball down the field … Get the ball down the second level. I thought all three guys (Bazelak, Tuttle and Williams) did a good job." Said he thought each had command of the offense. Will have to watch film to see dig into their reads.

Bazelak spent 3 seasons at Missouri before he entered the transfer portal after the 2021 season. Bazelak came to Indiana with an opportunity to win the starting QB job. His main competitor was Tuttle, but one more quarterback emerged as a threat to Bazelak and Tuttle. That quarterback was redshirt sophomore Dexter Williams.
“Dexter Williams has improved as much as anybody on the offense,” Allen said.
With Williams in the mix for the starting position, it will make the next 3 weeks very compelling for Indiana. Allen will wait until the team’s scrimmage to determine who the quarterback will be for Indiana. Bazelak, Tuttle, and Williams will have to prove that they are worthy of winning the battle.
