Mel Tucker and offensive coordinator Jay Johnson knew they’d have their work cut out for them in replacing star running back Kenneth Walker to the NFL.
A couple candidates in the transfer portal emerged to fill the void in Jalen Berger (Wisconsin) and Jarek Broussard (Colorado). And after scrimmaging Monday at practice, Tucker noted the competition in the running back room is promising.
“There’s a lot of competition there”, Tucker said, via Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press. Tucker also noted that the Spartans are glad to have Broussard, who transferred to the program in January.
Berger especially has impressed Tucker lately. He noted the Wisconsin transfer specifically following scrimmage Monday, averaging about 5 yards per carry.
“(Berger showed) real good traffic burst through the hole,” Tucker said.
