Mark Whipple provided some expectations for Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson heading into the 2022 season.
Thompson, a Texas transfer, enters his first season at Nebraska. He is set to make his first start for the Cornhuskers in less than 3 days. Thompson will be an important part in Nebraska having a turnaround season in 2022.
Nebraska offensive coordinator Whipple made it clear about what he expects to see from Thompson (Via HuskerOnline):
“Taking care of the football and being a leader, but the leadership comes from the play, not your mouth,” Whipple said.
Saturday will be Thompson’s first test as the team’s on-field leader. Whipple was asked if Thompson has won his team over:
“It’s not politics. Saturday we’ll find out, right? He’s won me over, he’s won coach over,” Whipple said.
Thompson came to Nebraska after 3 seasons at Texas. In 2021, Thompson passed for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Thompson transferred to Nebraska in January.
Not only will this be Thompson’s first game at Nebraska, but it will also be Whipple’s first game as the offensive coordinator. The quarterback and offensive coordinator will need to be on the same page throughout the season.
Nebraska will take on Northwestern on Saturday in Dublin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
