Two former Spartans were released by the Steelers on Tuesday. CB Justin Layne and WR Cody White didn’t make the Steelers’ final 53-man roster.
Layne was a 3-year veteran of the Steelers, having been picked by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 2019 draft. He finished with 41 tackles and 1 fumble recovery in 43 games over his three seasons, but never made a start for Pittsburgh. In his college career at Michigan State, Layne had 130 tackles, 3 interceptions and 24 pass breakups in 34 career games.
Layne’s former Spartan teammate Cody White also didn’t survive the Steelers’ cut on Tuesday. White joined the Steelers’ active roster from the practice squad in 2020. White spent time with the Chiefs, Giants and Broncos before joining the Steelers, and had five catches for 33 yards in 15 regular-season games. White had 143 receptions for 1,967 yards and 12 touchdowns in 35 career games as a Spartan.
Both Layne and White will be searching for new homes as free agents. Perhaps Spartan fans will see them on the field together at some point in the future.
