The Iowa Wave will have a new approach throughout the season for the 2022 Kid Captains.

For each home game, Kid Captains will get to decide which song will play during the Iowa Wave. The Kid Captains will be able to pick the song they want to play throughout the stadium.

For Saturday’s Week 1 game against South Dakota State, the Kid Captain, Eli Belser, selected “Brave” by Sara Bareilles as the song during the wave. When fans turn and wave, this song will be heard in the stadium.

This tradition began in 2017 when Iowa’s fans and players turned to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and waved at the children and families watching the game out of their windows. The hospital overlooks the stadium on the opposing team’s sideline.

The wave takes place every home game at the end of the first quarter and it is a moment to honor the children in the hospital. Although the tradition has only existed for 5 years, it is one of the best traditions in college football.

The Kid Captains will have an important role in the wave tradition in 2022. The wave can be seen for the first time in 2022 on Saturday when Iowa hosts South Dakota State at 12 p.m. ET.
