Mark Whipple ‘encouraged’ by Nebraska’s opening offensive showing in Week 0

Mark Whipple walked away from Nebraska’s Week 0 loss with a positive outlook on how the offense performed.
Nebraska lost to Northwestern by 3 points, 31-28, and the offense couldn’t close out the game when Northwestern rallied late. Last Saturday’s game was Whipple’s debut as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator. Previously, he was Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator until he left for Nebraska at the end of the 2021 season.

In addition to the Northwestern game being Whipple’s first, it was also quarterback Casey Thompson’s first game at Nebraska. Thompson had 355 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions.
Despite the loss, Whipple was able to see the bright side:
“I was more encouraged than discouraged,” Whipple said.

Nebraska will have more work to do on offense to finish games with a winning result. Whipple realized what his offense needed to do and he will work on that moving forward:
“We gotta finish. Finish. We’re not playing high school football anymore, where it’s 12-minute quarters. Fifteen minutes, you got 60 minutes, and we gotta do our best in the last 15 minutes of the game,” Whipple said.
He was hired as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator to bring stability to the offense. If running back Anthony Grant can replicate his 101-yard and 2-touchdown performance, then Nebraska’s offense will be able to put up more points.
Nebraska’s offense will look to put on a show against North Dakota on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
