Michigan State football will have three captains for the season opener, the Spartans announced on Wednesday.

Those three players are all key veteran leaders in quarterback Payton Thorne, defensive back Xavier Henderson and punter Bryce Baringer. That trio will lead the Spartans in Week 1 against Western Michigan.

Thorne was Michigan State’s starter throughout 2021, finishing the year 11-2 as a starter. Thorne threw for over 3,200 yards with 10 touchdowns and helped engineer the Peach Bowl comeback vs. Pittsburgh.

Henderson tied for the team lead with 96 total tackles last year with 10 TFL, 3 sacks and an interception and will try to help turn around a pass defense that was severely poor.

Baringer enters 2022 as a sixth-year senior and one of the best legs in the B1G. He averaged 48.4 yards per punt on 59 punts in 2021.

Hopefully, this group can lead the team well to open the season.
