College football fans have been eagerly awaiting the season, and the Penn State-Purdue game kicked off Week 1 in a big way.

On Friday, FOX Sports announced that the matchup had garnered over 3 million viewers.

There were 16 games being played across the week 1 landscape on Thursday, with three top 25 teams (Wake Forest, Pitt and Oklahoma State) kicking off their seasons as well. But, the headline of the night was Penn State and Purdue.

Those who tuned in were treated to a thrilling fight-to-the-end finish game. The Nittany Lions took the early lead, and went into the locker room at halftime up 21-10 over the Boilermakers. The Boilermakers fought back in the third quarter and led Penn State with less than 5 minutes to go in regulation. But, with an eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive completed in 1:25, the Nittany Lions refused to surrender, landing a 35-31 lead that would win the game.

Week 1 games continue on Saturday, with 57 games being played across all conferences.
