Kirk Ferentz was asked about what he thought was the worst part about his team’s lackluster showing against South Dakota State. It wasn’t just the fact that the game ended 7-3.
Ferentz said that he was the most disappointed with Iowa’s -2 turnover margin on Saturday per Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register. Iowa lost an interception and a fumble in the win.
Kirk Ferentz: Most disappointing thing about Saturday’s win vs. South Dakota State was -2 turnover margin.

Despite giving up 2 safeties in the game, South Dakota State didn’t have any turnovers. Last season, Iowa had the best turnover margin in the B1G, with +11. Ferentz knows that in order to win football games at this level, ball security is as important as ever. It also doesn’t do you a lot of favors if you can’t create some turnovers as well.
At the end of the day, Ferentz’s defense still held South Dakota State to 87 yards passing and 33 yards rushing. However, it was still against an FCS school.
Iowa will need to figure some things out with Iowa State coming to town on Saturday.
