Ohio State vs. Notre Dame was an exciting matchup on Saturday night. The Buckeyes toughed out a 21-10 win over the Irish in front of over 106,000 fans in Columbus.

The elite matchup is also reflected in the television ratings.

That is a big number in Week 1 of the season. However, the Chicago area and B1G market usually pull a strong number of viewers to the television screen.

In fact, the rating was much better than any game in the first week of last season. Georgia vs. Clemson in 2021 came in at 4.63 million viewers.

Fans certainly tuned in for football over the Labor Day weekend. While big, the mark by Ohio State and Notre Dame is not a total surprise given the tradition and ranking of both teams going into the season. The Buckeyes came in at No. 2 in the AP while the Fighting Irish were ranked No. 5 overall.

All-in-all, it was a good showing by the Irish against a preemptive strong Ohio State offense. On the flip side, Jim Knowles’ defense held Notre Dame to just 10 points.
