Anyone want Ryan Day?

Well, an NFL or college team is going to have to pay a hefty amount to get the Ohio State coach away from Columbus. According to a report from Bill Rabinowitz, the new contract for Day comes with a buyout that begins at $5 million if the head coach is to leave for a new job.

That is a lot of green.

Granted, Day holds an impressive record of 35-4 (.897 winning percentage) at Ohio State. Moreover, Day has won two major bowl games and took the Buckeyes to the national title game following the 2020 season. Ohio State would drop that game 52-24 to Alabama.

Day’s buyout decreases by $500,000 after Feb. 1, 2023. It then decreases by another $500,000 the following year.

The buyout drops to $3 million from Feb. 1, 2025 until Feb. 1, 2026, and declines by $1 million per year the next two years. The buyout is $750,000 dollars for the final year of Day’s contract.

Overall, the Buckeye head coach will make an annual salary of $9.5 million after a raise and two-year extension. The new contract runs through the 2028 season.

This could become more of an issue if Ohio State were to win the national championship this season. Could that put Day in an even better position for another college or NFL team?
