Greg McElroy gave his thoughts on Mickey Joseph’s debut as Nebraska’s interim head coach heading into the Week 3 matchup against Oklahoma.
This will be a challenging game for Joseph, as he will be taking on a top 10 team in his first game. Joseph assumed the role as the interim head coach following Scott Frost’s exit on Sunday. Frost was fired after Nebraska’s latest loss to Georgia Southern.
In an appearance on ESPN College Football’s YouTube channel, McElroy discussed what Joseph can bring to the Cornhuskers:
“(Mickey Joseph) didn’t have the greatest career as a player but is universally beloved by the coaching world. If you look at what he’s done most recently, as a WR coach, he was the architect of the WR room at LSU back in 2019… If you talk to the players that have played for him before, he meets you where you’re at. He’s the perfect guy in difficult circumstances to step into this role and even though they might not have talent, they’re going to give effort. If you don’t it’s on you as a player.”
McElroy believed that Joseph will be able to give Nebraska the recharge that the program needs. It will be on the players to turn the season around.
“Now, it’s ultimately on the players. They need to step up, they need to give great effort, and -when it’s close and the game is on the line – they need to make the play to push them over the edge,” McElroy said.
Joseph began the season as an associate head coach and the wide receivers coach for Nebraska. This was his first season with the program. He previously spent the past 5 seasons at LSU.
Nebraska will host No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
