Nebraska’s season got off to a shaky start, going 1-2 with losses to Northwestern and Georgia Southern. Add the firing of former head coach Scott Frost, and the Cornhuskers have been on a roller coaster already this season.
Like most analysts, Urban Meyer has thoughts on what was at the root of the problem at Nebraska, and how to fix it.
For Meyer, he says the problem is recruiting (Via On3 Sports):
“You have to ask why [they struggle today],” Urban Meyer said. “And my answer is the recruiting base.”
Due to conference realignments, Nebraska became unable to recruit in talent-rich areas where they no longer had rivalries, like Texas. Because the Cornhuskers could no longer recruit the same level of talent in a smaller area, they could no longer rely on their walk-on program, which had been a venerable staple of the Nebraska offense.
Meyer thinks that there’s a way to right the ship, but that moving too fast on a solution may be detrimental to the players.
“You know, Jeremy Foley is the guy that said, ‘What’s gonna happen eventually should be done immediately.’ I guess,” Urban Meyer said. “I had mixed feelings about that because I care about the players. Is that the right thing to do for the players?”
With the exit of Scott Frost and the elevation of Mickey Joseph to interim head coach, many think it will take a certain kind of coach for Nebraska to succeed. For Meyer, he says that is someone who knows the area.
“Nebraska is an elite job. Nebraska has got historically one of the winningest programs, a great fanbase. They’ve been down, they have to figure out this recruiting piece, they have to get someone who understands that area.”
