South Alabama’s trick-play audible out of FG formation goes horribly wrong

South Alabama was in the Rose Bowl for Week 3, looking to take down UCLA with a historic effort on the road.

For much of the game, the Jaguars were giving the Bruins all they could handle. UCLA finally woke up and chipped away with South Alabama clinging to a 31-29 lead with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Facing a 4th-down play, South Alabama lined up for a field goal. If kicked – and made – that field goal would have required the Bruins to score a touchdown in order to win the game.

However, before the snap, South Alabama audibled out of the field goal formation and dialed up a trick play. Unfortunately, that did not work in horrific fashion.

One bruin was left totally unblocked and broke in on the quarterback for the sack and turnover on downs.

Just how bad did that play prove to be? UCL would go down and kick the game-winning field goal for a 32-31 win as time expired. That one will sting for quite some time.
