AJ Henning has embraced his new role in Michigan’s offense as a hybrid offensive player.
Michigan has used Henning in multiple roles across the field and he has made the most of his versatility. Henning, who is a wide receiver, has helped Michigan in different plays in the offense and special teams.
In the NFL, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has flourished in a hybrid role. Henning is following in Samuel’s footsteps as a hybrid. Henning is embracing his role (Via 247 Sports):
“I embrace it a lot,” he said Tuesday. “You saw this past game, just playing a little bit of running back, just being all over the place — the running back position and the wide receiver position. Just versatility and matchups, that’s what it comes down to. Being in the best position to be successful on the offensive side of the ball is what it comes down to.”
In Michigan’s last game against Connecticut, Henning saw action as a wide receiver, running back, and a punt returner. Henning had a punt return touchdown against UConn. In addition to his return touchdown, Henning had 4 catches for 37 yards. He also had one rushing attempt for 3 yards.
Look for Henning to play a similar role in Michigan’s next game against Maryland on Saturday.
