Ryan Day talked how he reacted to finding out that Jaxon Smith-Njigba was injured in the season opener against Notre Dame. Griffin Strom of Eleven Warriors revealed what his reaction was once he knew Smith-Njigba was out.
Apparently the majority of the game plan for Notre Dame was built around Smith-Njigba. The star Ohio State WR left the game with a hamstring injury very early into the contest.
Day said, “Oh boy, what are we doing now?” and had to change things up.
Luckily Ohio State has enough depth at WR for that not to be a problem. Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison Jr. have filled into the hole he left quite nicely.
Day says much of the offensive gameplan for Notre Dame involved Smith-Njigba, and that he said, “Oh boy, what are we doing now?” when he went down with injury.

This could explain why the Buckeyes struggled to move the ball on offense against the Fighting Irish. Ohio State only beat Notre Dame by a score of 21-10, which is the lowest amount of points that the offense has scored in a game this season.
Ohio State has had no problem scoring the football since then. In its last three games, Ohio State has scored at least 45 points or more.
Will Day have to rework the offensive game plan again once Smith-Njigba is finally healthy?
