Round and round the Lions’ Kicker carousel goes, and in the lucky number 10 spot, Sam Ficken goes.

On Tuesday, the Lions announced that they had added Ficken, the 10th kicker since Matt Prater’s departure.

A Penn State alum, Ficken was one of the all-time great kickers for the Nittany Lions. He is second on the school’s all-time list in field goals made (54) and points (271). Ficken made 15 consecutive field goals breaking the Penn State record for consecutive field goals made in 2013.

Ficken went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, but has since bounced around to multiple teams, including the Jaguars, Rams, Seahawks, Jets, and Packers among others. Ficken won the kicker job with the Tennessee Titans in 2021, but suffered a groin injury and was replaced by Michael Badgley. In the Week 1 game, Badgley missed an XP and a 46-yard FG and was immediately cut.

Perhaps Detroit will work out better for Ficken. The Lions are back in action against the Cowboys on Oct. 23.
