A former B1G gunslinger will open the season as the starter for LSU.
Ex-Purdue quarterback Danny Etling was named the starter for the Tigers on Tuesday by head coach Ed Orgeron.
“We believe in Danny,” Orgeron said. “We hope he has a great year.”
Etling started in 10 games for LSU in 2016, but wasn’t the No. 1 guy at the beginning of the year. The 6-foot-3 gunslinger went 7-3 as a starter, throwing for 2,123 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing nearly 60 percent of his passes.
While at Purdue, Etling started in 12 games between 2013 and 2014. He accounted for 2,490 passing yards 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in those two seasons in West Lafayette. He transferred to LSU at the beginning of the 2015 season.
LSU opens the year against BYU on Sept. 2.
