Much like how he was at Illinois, Dawuane Smoot is a leader for the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Saturday, he’ll show it once more.

Smoot was named the 6th and final captain for Jacksonville’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. E.T. at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Drafted in 2017, Smoot has been 1 of the few players that’s lasted in Duval County throughout his career.

In six seasons, Smooth has recorded 107 total tackles, 51 QB hits, 21 tackles for loss and 19 sacks. His best season came in 2021 when he started 10 games and totaled 36 tackles, 16 QBs hits, and 6 sacks.

In March of 2021, Smoot agreed to terms on a two-year extension worth $10 million. He is set to become a free agent following the 2022 season.

Both of Smoot’s teams might have turned the corner this season. The Jaguars are currently 2-3, but have played competitive football and very well could be 5-0. Meanwhile, the Illini are 5-1 under 2nd-year coach Bret Bielema and are ranked for the 1st time since 2011.

The No. 24 Fighting Illini will play host to Minnesota at Noon E.T. Saturday. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
