Greg McElroy revealed one B1G team that is treating its fans to an unexpected season.

During Monday’s ‘Always College Football‘ episode, McElroy mentioned that Illinois is the team that is surprising people and its fan base should be excited.

The Fighting Illini is currently No. 1 in the B1G West and No. 14 in the overall AP Top 25 Poll. Illinois defeated Nebraska in dominant fashion 26-9 last Saturday. The Fighting Illini are now the third-highest-ranked B1G team after Michigan and Ohio State.

McElroy added more of the overall reasoning behind picking Illinois and how they have the right recipe to compete with Ohio State in a potential B1G Championship Game matchup.

Looking at everything else, it’s hard for me not to acknowledge what Illinois is doing… Do I think Illinois can go toe-to-toe with Ohio State? Probably not, right? I don’t think they’d fare well (in a B1G Championship matchup), but I think they could place some keep-away. And if you can play keep away and run the football and establish the line of scrimmage and next thing you know you have 37 minutes time of possession… I think they have the right recipe to keep Ohio State’s offense off the field.

Not to mention, McElroy also highlighted that Illinois and Michigan will be tough competition. So, the fans should be in for a treat.

“Obviously against Michigan, they’re going to match up pretty well,” explained McElroy. “Michigan in a lot of ways does some of the similar things to what Illinois does at times.”
