JJ McCarthy ‘way ahead’ of expectations as a first-year starter, says Michigan assistant Matt Weiss

JJ McCarthy is ahead of schedule in his 1st season as Michigan’s starting quarterback, according to Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss.
Weiss works directly with McCarthy as the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. He has been pleased with McCarthy’s progress in his 1st year as the full-time starter.

While talking to the media on Wednesday, Weiss gave his thoughts on McCarthy’s progress:
“We’re thrilled with J.J. He’s way ahead of anywhere we expected him to be as a first-year starter at this point, and it’s really a credit to him and his approach and how hard he works,” Weiss said. “He’s really talented, but he’s even surpassed our expectations.”
McCarthy was named the starting quarterback in mid-September and he has not looked back. McCarthy has passed for 1,464 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He has been a factor in the running game with 197 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown, and 35 rush attempts.
In Week 9, McCarthy passed for 167 yards and 1 touchdown against Michigan State. He completed 60% of his passes. In addition to his solid passing performance, McCarthy rushed for 50 yards on 7 attempts in the win.
A 2nd consecutive appearance in the College Football Playoff is at stake and McCarthy will be a critical piece in Michigan’s Playoff run. Michigan will be on the road against Rutgers in Week 10.
