Joel Klatt stressed the importance of the College Football Playoff’s initial rankings.
The 1st set of rankings released Tuesday night and it was an indication of the teams who will be competing for the Playoff. Klatt noticed people writing off the initial rankings and made it clear that the 1st rankings matter for the Playoff. In the latest episode of the Joel Klatt Show, Klatt explained why the rankings mattered.

“Everyone is going to tell you on social media that these CFP rankings don’t matter and I couldn’t disagree more,” Klatt said. “Really? They absolutely matter, I don’t quite understand. That’s like saying the first quarter of a game doesn’t matter.”
Klatt understood that Tuesday’s rankings were not the final rankings, but they indicated the teams that will be in contention for the Playoff. He also mentioned how the brands of certain programs played a role in deciding the 4 representatives.
The 4 teams in the initial ranking were No. 1 Tennessee, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, and No. 4 Clemson. In what was a controversial decision, Clemson made the top 4 over Michigan, who is also undefeated. Since Michigan was not initially part of the top 4, they will likely need to win out to make the Playoff in December.
