The Michigan Wolverines’ defense took a hit on Monday, when coach Jim Harbaugh announced that a freshman defensive lineman would be out for the year.

Speaking with reporters, Harbaugh said Donovan Jeter would miss the entire 2017 season after having surgery on an undisclosed injury.

That’s bad news for the highly touted freshman, but the silver lining is that he can take a redshirt this year and try to be back to full strength for 2018:

According to the 247Sports composite, Jeter was a 4-star recruit coming out of high school. He was the No. 12 strong-side defensive end in the class of 2017 and the No. 8 overall recruit from the state of Pennsylvania.

The Michigan defense will still be fine without Jeter, but it’s disappointing for Harbaugh and the Wolverines that he’ll miss out on a full year of practice.
