Ryan Walters talked about what he saw in former Illinois DB Kerby Joseph. Joseph now plays for the Detroit Lions in the NFL after getting coached by Walters for one season.
Walters knew that Joseph was going to be special after seeing him throughout various points last season. One moment that stood out was in the Virginia game where Joseph had his first career interception.
Walters also noted how Joseph continued to improve each week.
“There were different moments. The Virginia game, his first interception I was like, ‘Wow, I don’t know if I’ve ever coached somebody who can make that play.’ Then obviously you know the history of it. We changed defensively and put him in the post for the majority of the snaps. Every week he would continue to get better, not only in the pass game but he was really aggressive in coming up and defending the run.”
Joseph and the Lions play the Chicago Bears next on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
