Mickey Joseph tells the press that Casey Thompson did not practice Tuesday and looks to be day-to-day going into this week. Thompson was initially injured against Illinois and missed the loss to Minnesota in Week 10.

If Thompson cannot practice Wednesday, he would be ruled out for the game vs. Michigan. Joseph named backup quarterbacks Logan Smothers and Chubba Purdy as the two options the Huskers will likely go with depending on the results of Thursday’s practice.

Per 247 Sport’s Brian Christopherson:

Thompson sustained an arm injury during Week 8’s loss to Illinois and has been limited for the last 2 weeks.

Purdy would get the initial start against Minnesota but after only completing 37% of his passes and throwing an interception he was eventually replaced by Smothers. Smothers was a marginal improvement with a completion rate of 50% against the Golden Gophers.

Together they threw for 121 yards with 0 touchdowns and an average of 4.7 yards per attempt.

Joseph made it clear that building confidence between the two backups is critical moving forward on the season. Despite the mistakes, he knows that either one could take the starting role for this weekend’s game at Ann Arbor against Michigan.
