Matt Rhule addresses question of what’s next for coaching career

Matt Rhule has proven he can coach at the college level. Will he be back on the sidelines in 2023?

Rhule openly spoke of his future role in coaching during an interview on “Good Morning Football” Wednesday. While the former Temple and Baylor coach hasn’t ruled out returning to the collegiate ranks, he also hasn’t ruled out staying on the professional side after the 2022 season.

Rhule has been linked to the Nebraska opening since being fired by the Carolina Panthers last month.

“I don’t know where I’ll coach,” Rhule said. “I loved the NFL, I loved college football. Most importantly, for me, I loved pouring into young people… I just want to have an impact on people… It could be Monday, it could be two years from now, but when it comes I’ll be ready.”

A proven winner at the college level, Rhule revitalized 2 programs in less than a decade. After leading Temple to a 2-10 record in 2013, the Owls would go 26-13 over the next 3 seasons, winning the AAC conference in 2016.

Hired by Baylor in 2017, Rhule turned the Bears back into a Big 12 powerhouse in just 3 seasons. After a 1-11 start, Baylor finished 18-9 with back-to-back bowl appearances under Rhule’s regime, including a trip to the Sugar Bowl following the 2019 season.

Conflicting reports have surrounded Rhule’s status with the Cornhuskers entering Rivalry Week. According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, the 47-year-old turned down the job after being offered earlier this month. However, other reports have stated that Rhule remains in the running as of this time.

Dodd mentioned that both Washington’s Kalen DeBoer and Kansas’ Lance Leipold were also linked to the opening, but both coaches signed extensions with their current schools Tuesday evening. Other names to watch for include Kansas State’s Chris Kleiman, N.C. State’s Dave Doren and Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell.
