David Diamond, a Michigan-based attorney, released a statement on behalf of Michigan State defensive back Angelo Grose following the recent charges made against 7 Spartan players.

“I have been doing this for over 20 years and have litigated several hundred trials and would like to believe this filing is not politically motivated,” Diamond said in part in a statement to the Free Press. “I have reviewed similar altercations, on and off the field, at both the collegiate and professional levels, and cannot find many criminal filings. The Michigan Penal Code for aggravated assault requires infliction of serious or aggravated injury.

“It is time to get Angelo and the others back on the field as well. We all are working to make college athletics better, with the alleged fights, antisemitic tweets, and offensive use of the N-word being hurled around.”

Grose was charged with 1 count of aggravated assault, in violation of MCL 750.81a, a misdemeanor in the state. All 6 players were also charged with 1 count of aggravated assault, though Khary Crump has also been charged with felonious assault. Jacoby Windmon was charged with assault and battery.

The Spartans will travel to State College to face No. 11 Penn State Saturday at 4:00 p.m. E.T. Michigan State must win to be bowl eligible in 2022.
