Matt Rhule’s contract details for his job with Nebraska are being released. According to one report, Rhule’s deal will be for 8 years with the Huskers.
Nebraska did not wait long to make the move to hire Rhule. The official announcement came Saturday morning of Rivalry Weekend, just hours after the Huskers finished a 4-8 season with an upset of Iowa.
On Sunday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that Rhule’s new contract will be for $72 million over 8 years. That deal would also benefit the Carolina Panthers by offsetting a lot of the money the franchise still owed Rhule after firing the head coach this season.
When Nebraska hired Matt Rhule, they did more than just set up their future — they also offset the vast majority of the $34M the #Panthers still owed him. This was the thought when CAR hired Rhule. If he didn’t work out, they would be covered. He’ll make $72M over 8 in Nebraska.

If those details are proven correct, Rhule’s contract will work out to $9 million annually over the course of his deal. By contrast, Scott Frost’s initial deal at Nebraska paid $5 million annually.
Rhule does come to Lincoln with a better resumé as a program builder, but that is still a large number for the Huskers. Rhule will immediately be among the highest-paid coaches in the B1G and faces a tough rebuild at Nebraska.
