Nebraska has announced that former Dave Rimington, a former Huskers offensive lineman and current president of the Boomer Esiason Foundation, will be the director of athletics on an interim basis.

Last week, Nebraska fired Shawn Eichorst from the position after five years in Lincoln. He was responsible for firing Bo Pelini at the end of the 2014 season and bringing in current head coach Mike Riley for the 2015 campaign.

Rimington was a member of Nebraska’s football program in the early 1980s, and has become one of the most notable offensive lineman in college football history. During his collegiate career, he was a two-time Outland Trophy winner and won the Lombardi Award once. He also placed fifth on the Heisman ballot at the end of the 1982 season.

Because of his success in Lincoln, the Rimington Trophy was named in his honor and has been given to the nation’s top center since the 2000 season.

Rimington is a native of Omaha and has his named etched in Nebraska football history.
